The adhesive industry has developed rapidly in recent years. It is widely used in industrial and civil applications and plays an important role in the development of the national economy. With the continuous emergence of various new adhesives and the continuous improvement of bonding technology, many new terms have also appeared. 1. General terms

(1) Adhesive: A substance that binds adherends together through adhesion.

(2) Adhesion: The state where two surfaces are joined together by chemical force, physical force or both.

(3) Stickies: The objects to be glued or the objects on both sides of the glue layer after glueing.

(4) Substrate: the material used to coat adhesive on the surface.

(5) Gluing: Use adhesive to connect the surfaces of the adherends together.

(6) Curing: The process in which the adhesive obtains bonding strength and other properties through a chemical reaction.

(7) Hardening: The process in which the adhesive obtains and improves the bonding strength and other properties through chemical reaction or physical action.

(8) Adhesive layer: the adhesive layer in the glued parts.

(9) Glue overflow: the adhesive extruded from the glue layer after pressing the adhesive.

(10) Drying time: the time that the surface of the adherend is exposed to the air after the glue is applied to before being laminated.

(14) Room temperature curing: curing at room temperature. (Normal temperature refers to 23±2°C)

(15) Post-curing: further processing (such as heating, etc.) on the bonded parts after initial curing.

(16) Under-cured: The adhesive is under-cured.

(17) Primer: In order to improve the bonding performance, a coating applied on the surface of the adherend before applying the glue.

(18) Dipping: The process of dipping the adherend into the adhesive liquid for coating.

(19) Spraying: spray the glue on the adherend with a glue gun.

2. Terminology for bonding formation

(1) Adhesive joint: the part where two adherends are glued together with adhesive.

(2) Overlap joint: a joint formed by partially overlapping two adherends and gluing them together.

(3) Socket joint: the glued part of the two adherends forms a joint with a pin shaft or a socket structure (such as: bar and pipe, pipe and pipe).

(4) T-shaped joint: two adhesive joints with T-shaped main surfaces of the adherend.

3. Performance and test terminology

(1) Storage period: Under certain conditions, the adhesive can still maintain its operational performance and storage time for the specified strength.

(2) Pot life: refers to the period of time from when the glue is evenly mixed until the viscosity increases to the point when the gel is not suitable for brushing. It is also called the pot life.

(3) Solid content (non-volatile content): The weight percentage of non-volatile matter in the adhesive measured under the specified test conditions.

(4) Chemical resistance: the resistance of the glued parts to the action of acids, alkalis, salts and other chemicals.

(5) Solvent resistance: the ability of the glued joint to maintain its glueing performance after solvent action.

(6) Weather resistance: the ability of the glued parts to resist sunlight, cold, heat, wind, rain and other conditions.

(7) Shear strength: Under the action of the load parallel to the adhesive layer, when the adhesive sample is broken, the shear force per unit of adhesive surface is expressed in MPa.

(8) Tensile strength: the tensile force that the unit adhesive surface bears when the adhesive part is broken.

(9) Peel strength: Under the specified peeling conditions, the load per unit width when the glued sample is separated, expressed in KN/m.

(10) Impact strength: When the bonded sample is damaged by the impact load, the unit consumption of the bonded surface is expressed by "KJ/cm2".

(11) Sleeve compression shear strength: Under the action of axial force, the compression shear force that a unit adhesive surface can withstand when the sleeve joint is broken, expressed in Mpa.

(12) Structural glue: used for the glue connection of stressed structural parts, which can withstand many stresses for a long time. Normal temperature shear strength is generally required to be ≤15MPa.

(13) Viscosity, commonly known as concentration: also known as internal friction and viscosity, is a characteristic of the adhesive that hinders its relative flow.

(14) High and low temperature alternating test: A test to detect changes in performance after the bonded sample is subjected to a specified high and low temperature cycle.

(15) Curing temperature: the temperature required for curing (hardening) of the adhesive.
